Frequently Asked Questions

What is U-Found.org?
U-Found.org is here to protect your personal property from loss. U-Found.org's service operates 24/7, alerting you immediately if your lost item is found.
Why is this service necessary?
Its estimated that over 25M cell phones are lost each year, just in the US. Every day, people leave their homes with portable electronic devices worth hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. Cell phones, laptops, I-Pods, PDAs, digital cameras, etc. These are all expensive items designed to fit in your pocket, making them easy to misplace without realizing it.
Do expensive items like portable electronics ever get returned?
Data shows that about 70% of lost items are returned to their owners when they have some type of contact information attached to them- regardless of the item's value. At U-Found.org, it is our belief that its well worth the 50 cents per label for the chance at getting your lost valuable back while protecting your personal information.
Can't I just write my name on my valuable items and save some money?
Putting personal information on your valuables puts you at risk. Just as you wouldn't want to put your name on your car or house keys, placing your personal contact information on valuables like cell phones and laptops may provide the wrong people with too much information about you.
I have been contacted by someone who has found my lost item, what do I do next?
If someone who has found your lost item contacts you, you have two options. First, you are welcome to work with the finder directly to coordinate its return. If your lost item is found you will receive an email from U-Found.org with suggestions on how to get it back quickly and easily. Second, if you don’t want to work with the finder directly, simply contact U-Found.org's return team and we will do the work for you.
What is the reward offered to finders?
Finders receive a free set of U-Found.org labels and are entered into our annual drawing for a gift certificate from a national electronics retailer.
How do the labels work?
U-Found.org utilizes unique labels and the internet to connect finders with the owners of lost valuables. Customers of our site are assigned a unique ID number, and that number appears on the labels we provide. By affixing the labels to personal property, U-Found.org owners can mark their valuable assets as their own without releasing important personal information.
When an item is lost, instructions on the label and the unique ID number allow U-Found.org to connect the owner and finder.
How can a finder return my lost item if he doesn't have my contact info?
The finder contacts U-Found.org and provides the unique number on the label. We compare that number to our U-Found.org database and contact the owner. That way, the finder never knows the owner's identity unless the owner chooses to divulge that information.
U-Found.org labels aren't expensive, are there other fees involved?
After the first year of having U-Found labels, we charge an annual $1.00 subscription fee. If a U-Found.org owner loses an item and asks for U-Found.org's help in retrieval via an overnight delivery service, courier, etc., the owner will be responsible for the delivery expenses related to the return of the lost item. Otherwise there are no additional fees.
How do I register and activate my labels when I receive them?
Your U-Found.org labels are automatically registered in your name when you purchase them, once you have received them all you need to do is just peel and stick them on your valuables!
How do I change my contact information?
To change your personal or contact information, log on to U-Found.org and select “My account”. You will need your account id (the email address you used when you created your U-Found.org account) and your password. Once you are logged in, you can update all your contact information.
How do finders return lost items?
Returning a lost item is easy for Finders. Finders can log on to U-Found.org and use our ‘Found Something’ link to quickly notify U-Found.org of the found item. U-Found.org will then notify the owner.
I got an email from U-Found.org reminding me to update my contact info- what do I need to do?
U-Found.org will contact the owners of all of our registered labels several times a year to remind them to update their U-Found.org account with current contact information. If none of your contact information has changed, then there is no need to do anything. The emails are just reminders for those owners that may have moved or made changes that affect their contact info. If we can't contact you, we can't help to get your lost items back!
What kind of items can U-Found.org labels help get returned?
Anything valuable that leaves the house: a lost cell phone, a lost laptop, a lost I-Pod, a lost camera- all of these items and more!
